One of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Shiva, at the foot of the Brahmagiri hills near the source of the Godavari.
Overview
Trimbakeshwar is a temple town west of Nashik city, set beneath the Brahmagiri hills. The temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas — the most sacred shrines of Shiva — and draws pilgrims throughout the year.
The present stone temple is commonly dated to the eighteenth century, during the Peshwa period. The town is also home to Kushavarta Kund, the sacred tank associated with the Godavari.
Significance
The linga at Trimbakeshwar is traditionally described as representing Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva together. During the Simhastha Kumbh, Trimbakeshwar is one of the two principal locations of the sacred bathing traditions, alongside Ramkund in Nashik.
