A celebrated Rama temple in Panchavati, named for its idol of Rama in black stone.
Overview
The Kalaram Temple stands in the Panchavati area of Nashik. Its name comes from the black-stone idol of Rama (‘Kala Ram’). The temple is generally dated to the late eighteenth century.
The temple is a focal point of Rama devotion in Nashik, particularly during Ram Navami.
Significance
Panchavati is associated in the Ramayana tradition with the exile of Rama, Sita and Lakshmana. The Kalaram Temple is also historically significant as the site of the 1930 temple-entry satyagraha led by Dr B. R. Ambedkar.
